California is home to some of the world's most expensive golf experiences (looking at you, Pebble Beach at $675). But the Golden State also harbors an impressive collection of public courses that deliver world-class conditioning and design at a fraction of private club pricing.

Northern California

Poppy Ridge Golf Course, Livermore — $85-$120

This NCGA-owned facility in the Livermore wine country delivers three nine-hole loops that can be combined into various 18-hole configurations. Excellent conditioning, fair pricing, and a gorgeous valley setting make it the best value in the Bay Area.

Diablo Grande Golf Club, Patterson — $55-$95

Two hours east of San Francisco lies one of California's best-kept secrets. The Ranch and Legends courses were designed by Denis Griffiths and offer dramatic terrain and views of the valley. Afternoon rates can be as low as $40 in summer.

Southern California

Rustic Canyon Golf Course, Moorpark — $65-$95

Consistently ranked among California's top 10 public courses, Rustic Canyon is a Gil Hanse design built on a minimal budget but delivering maximum quality. The course wanders through natural canyons with minimal bunkering — strategic, beautiful, and affordable.

Palos Verdes Golf Club, Palos Verdes Estates — $100-$140

Dramatic cliffside ocean views rival anything at Pebble Beach at a fraction of the cost. The William Bell design from 1924 has been lovingly preserved. The 16th hole with its Pacific Ocean backdrop is one of the most photographed in Southern California.

California public course rates vary enormously by time and day. Twilight rates (after 2-3pm) can be 40-50% lower than morning peak times. Use GolfNow or the TeeOff app to find last-minute deals.
