Golf in Ireland: Complete 10-Day Links Tour Guide

Ireland's links courses represent the purest form of the game — raw, elemental, and carved by nature. No two rounds are ever the same. The wind dictates everything, and that unpredictability is exactly what makes Irish golf so addictive.

The Essential Irish Links

Ballybunion Old Course, County Kerry

Tom Watson called Ballybunion the best course he had ever played. The Old Course sits on towering sand dunes above the Atlantic and plays as a pure test of links golf. The back nine is particularly extraordinary, with several holes dropping dramatically toward the ocean.

Lahinch Golf Club, County Clare

Lahinch is everything you want in an Irish links — character, history, and a local pub serving Guinness after the round. The Klondyke hole is one of the most famous blind par-5s in golf, and the Doolough is a short par-3 that has humiliated generations of golfers.

Royal County Down, Northern Ireland

Consistently ranked in the world's top five, Royal County Down at Newcastle sits in the shadow of the Mourne Mountains with views across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man. The 9th hole is widely considered one of the most beautiful in golf.

Northern Ireland requires a short trip from Dublin (2.5 hours by car) but adds Royal County Down and Royal Portrush — both world-class — to your itinerary. Highly recommended to include in any 10-day tour.

Suggested 10-Day Itinerary

  1. 1Days 1-2: Arrive Dublin, play Portmarnock and Royal Dublin
  2. 2Day 3: Drive to Killarney, play Killarney Golf Club (Killeen Course)
  3. 3Days 4-5: Lahinch and Doonbeg
  4. 4Days 6-7: Ballybunion Old and Cashen courses
  5. 5Day 8: Drive north through Connemara, play Connemara Golf Club
  6. 6Days 9-10: Royal County Down in Newcastle (Northern Ireland)
  • Best travel months: May and September (settled weather, long days)
  • Fly into Dublin, return from Belfast for Northern Ireland finish
  • Rental car essential — public transport doesn't reach most links courses
  • Book caddie in advance for Ballybunion and Royal County Down
  • Budget: 3,000-5,000 EUR per person for 10 nights including green fees
