10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Deer Valley home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Deer Valley is the Ritz-Carlton of ski resorts - and I mean that without irony. They groom everything, limit ticket sales so runs are not tracked to dirt by noon, offer valet ski storage, and the on-mountain dining is from an actual culinary team. After living in Park City and skiing Deer Valley regularly, you understand that this level of hospitality is a real product choice that someone chose to do completely and well. The skiing itself is excellent - not the largest or steepest, but meticulously managed.

The skiers-only policy (no snowboards) is either wonderful or pointless depending on who you ask. Locals appreciate the slightly different snow management style it enables. Empire Canyon on the east side is where serious skiers go - steep, consistent, and the site of World Cup races.

Insider Tips

  • 1
Silver Lake Lodge has the best on-mountain lunch in Utah - order the turkey chili and eat outside on a bluebird day.
  • 2
Empire Canyon is where World Cup slalom races happen - the grooming standards are exceptional.
  • 3
Arrive at 8:30am for first chairs - Deer Valley limits attendance and you will actually beat lines.
  • 4
The parking is valet but you can self-park lower and take the shuttle - save money.

Local Secrets

  • Mayflower Chutes and Know You Do Not are technical lines that challenge any skier - the double-black ratings are accurate.
  • Seafood Buffet on Friday and Saturday nights at Deer Valley is an experience - expensive but remarkable quality.

What to Avoid

  • Do not dismiss Deer Valley because of the no snowboard policy if you ski - the grooming and service are worth experiencing.
  • Avoid expecting Deer Valley to be affordable - budget 200 plus per lift ticket and 30 for lunch.

Weather Reality

Deer Valley averages 300 inches of Utah's famous light powder per year. North-facing terrain and cold temperatures mean powder days stay ungroomed in designated areas for 2-3 days.

The Jordanelle State Park reservoir below Deer Valley has ice fishing in winter and paddleboarding in summer - a completely different world a 10-minute drive from the resort.
