Fernie is what happens when a coal-mining town decides to ski. The Lizard Range that frames Fernie Alpine Resort has five alpine bowls that catch snow from every direction — the result is a mountain that seems to get twice the snow of everywhere around it. Locals call it "Powder Town" with complete sincerity. The Elk Valley community has a certain working-class grit that keeps Fernie real. There are no W Hotels here. There's the Fernie Hotel bar and the Brickhouse Bistro and that's exactly how people like it.
The mountain gets very windy on the upper bowls in certain conditions — locals know to drop into Cedar Bowl or Timber Bowl when Polar Peak is blasting sideways. Those protected lower bowls often have the better snow anyway. Downtown Fernie is 10 minutes from the mountain and that separation is actually a feature — it means the town has a real year-round community, not just an apres-ski strip.

Fairy Creek Natural Area, a 20-minute drive from town, has old-growth forest hikes and a frozen waterfall in winter that almost no one visits. The kind of place you find after living somewhere for years.
Calgary Airport is 3 hours via Highway 3. The Crowsnest Pass section can be challenging in storms. A direct shuttle service runs from Calgary Airport on weekends in ski season.
