10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Jackson Hole home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has the most imposing first impression of any ski resort in America. You step off the aerial tram at 10,450 feet and look down 4,139 vertical feet to the valley floor, and the Tetons spread out in every direction like a geography lesson about what mountains should look like. After ten years here you develop a relationship with Corbet's Couloir - the most famous in-bounds feature in America - that shifts from that terrifying thing to Tuesday morning warm-up.

The town of Jackson is 20 minutes from the resort and is its own complete experience. The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, the elk antler arches at Town Square, the National Museum of Wildlife Art up on the hill - it is a genuine Western mountain town that has been discovered but retains its identity. Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone are literally next door.

Insider Tips

  • 1
Casper Bowl off the tram is where locals ski on powder days - a long, moderate pitch that holds snow beautifully.
  • 2
The Bridger Gondola on the east side is the local's preferred lift - less crowded than the tram, accesses excellent terrain.
  • 3
The Hobacks on the south side of the mountain are moderate but consistently hold powder several days after storms.
  • 4
Locals eat in Teton Village during ski season and save Jackson town restaurants for off-season.
  • 5
Corbet's Couloir on a weekday morning has a short lineup. Wednesdays at 10am is the ideal window.

Local Secrets

  • Nora's Fish Creek Inn in Wilson (7 miles from resort) is where ski patrol has breakfast - no reservations, packed, transcendent pancakes.
  • The National Elk Refuge adjacent to Jackson hosts the largest elk herd in North America in winter - 7,500 plus animals.

What to Avoid

  • Do not ski Rendezvous Bowl your first day if you are intermediate - it looks like moderate terrain and is significantly harder than it appears.
  • Avoid Jackson Hole on spring break - the resort gets genuinely overcrowded.

Weather Reality

Jackson Hole has notoriously variable weather - it can dump 2 feet and be sunny and cold the next day. January is statistically the best powder month. Afternoon wind events on the upper mountain can be severe.

Hidden Gem

The National Elk Refuge adjacent to Jackson town hosts 7,500+ elk in winter. Horse-drawn sleigh rides through the herd are available and deeply moving.

Ski Like a Local

  • Sublette Peak chair accesses the most consistent expert terrain - Tensleep and the High Traverse are must-skis.
  • After 3pm on storm days, ski resort traffic clears and the fresh snow in Rendezvous Bowl stays untouched until morning.

Golf Like a Local

  • Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club plays through the sage flats with Teton views on every hole - June is prime when the wildflowers bloom.
  • Tee off early morning for the best light on the Tetons - afternoon shadows change the course completely.
