10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Queenstown home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Queenstown is genuinely the adventure capital of the world, and I say that having lived there and seen the claim tested. The Remarkables and Coronet Peak ski areas are real mountains with real skiing - not just a backdrop for bungee jumping. The Remarkables' Lake Alta face has 45-degree terrain accessed via a short hike. Coronet Peak's night skiing with Wakatipu basin views is extraordinary. But the skiing is only part of what makes Queenstown. The town itself is relentlessly energetic, beautiful, and has a restaurant scene that punches well above its size.

Lake Wakatipu defines Queenstown - the irregular Z-shaped glacial lake surrounded by the Remarkables on one side and Cecil Peak on the other is one of the most beautiful townscapes in the world. Skiing in the morning, wine tasting in Central Otago wine country in the afternoon, fine dining in the evening. Queenstown rewards the multi-day visitor who allows themselves to be absorbed by the place.
