10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Snowbird home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Snowbird and Alta are separated by 1 mile of road in Little Cottonwood Canyon and together form the greatest powder skiing concentration in the world. Snowbird has the aerial tram, the steepest terrain, and the circus energy of thousands of powder chasers competing for first tracks. After years here you learn to read the canyon - the specific weather patterns that produce the lightest snow versus the heaviest.

The Peruvian Ridge and Mineral Basin area on the back side opened in 2014 and fundamentally changed the mountain. Mineral Basin faces east and gets a different sun exposure than the front side. The interconnect with Alta means you can lap two massive mountains in a day. Snowbird is unambiguously one of the greatest ski mountains on earth.

Insider Tips

  • 1
The Tram starts at 8am and the front-of-line position requires arriving before 7:30am on powder days.
  • 2
Mineral Basin on the back side is excellent intermediates' territory - less steep than the front, still exceptional snow.
  • 3
Hidden Peak summit at 11,000 feet has views of multiple states on a clear day.
  • 4
Silver Fox Gully and the terrain off Cirque area are the most consistently deep powder zones.

Local Secrets

  • Iron Blosam Lodge's Aerie restaurant rooftop is a locals' view spot that few visitors find.
  • The combination of Snowbird and Alta on a single powder day is one of the great ski experiences on the planet.

What to Avoid

  • Do not underestimate Snowbird's exposure - the terrain is genuinely expert and the fall consequences are real.
  • Avoid the Chickadee area near noon on a powder day - it gets crowded quickly.

Weather Reality

Little Cottonwood Canyon receives the most consistent snow of any Utah canyon. Snowbird has a 146-day average ski season.

Hidden Gem

The Snowbird Center has climbing walls in summer and the aerial tram runs year-round to the summit - summer hiking above treeline with wildflower meadows is spectacular.
