10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Squaw Valley home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley) hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics and the mountain still carries that history in its bones. The Olympic Village area at the base has the original 1960 tower clock and the legacy of hosting international competition. Technically this is now the same resort as Alpine Meadows - the interconnect lets you ski both in one day, creating a combined 6,000+ acres that is genuinely among the largest ski areas in North America.

The terrain at Palisades is legitimately varied and legitimately challenging. Granite Chief area and Headwall are expert-only and the ratings are accurate. The intermediate terrain around Shirley Lake is excellent and scenic. The combination with Alpine Meadows via the interconnect tunnel gondola gives you one of the most complete ski experiences in the West.

Insider Tips

  • 1
The interconnect with Alpine Meadows via the gondola tunnel is the most interesting terrain combination in California skiing.
  • 2
KT-22 chair is the locals' heart - if you ask a Palisades regular what their favourite chair is, it will be KT-22.
  • 3
Tahoe City (10 minutes south) has better restaurants and lodging prices than the resort Village.

Local Secrets

  • The Shirley Lake area is the beautiful, gentle escape from Palisades' aggressive reputation - long intermediate runs through trees.

What to Avoid

  • Do not attempt the Headwall or Red Dog Cliffs area without proper expert credentials.

Weather Reality

Hidden Gem

The Palisades Olympic Museum at the Village documents the 1960 Winter Olympics in extraordinary detail - the stories of the athletes who competed when the resort was just a valley in the Sierra are remarkable.

Ski Like a Local

  • On a powder day at Palisades, ski the backside of KT-22 first via the Silverado area before the tracked opens.

Golf Like a Local

  • Tahoe Donner Golf Course in Truckee is the most affordable round near Palisades - excellent Sierra setting.
