10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Sun Peaks home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Sun Peaks is Canada's second-largest ski area and somehow still feels like a secret. The village was purpose-built but managed not to feel manufactured — it has a genuine pedestrian warmth that you don't always find in planned mountain communities. Three mountains, Tod Mountain being the main event with the big vertical, Morrisey with its wide-open runs, and Sundance perfect for families. Locals debate which mountain is "theirs" the way locals debate everything. I always end up on Morrisey on a Tuesday — wide, smooth, empty.

The Interior BC climate means Sun Peaks gets long cold spells that keep the powder dry and light through January. The humidity that plagues coastal BC mountains doesn't reach this far inland. What you get instead is sustained cold, consistent snowpack, and that particular squeak of very dry snow under your skis that means perfect conditions. The town itself has a European village influence — skating rink in the plaza, walking streets, Christmas lights that stay up through February.

Insider Tips

  • 1
The Sunburst chair on Tod Mountain is where locals go on powder days — it accesses the best tree skiing on the mountain.
  • 2
Hike to Sundance Peak on a clear day for a 360-degree view that includes Mount Robson on the horizon.
  • 3
Sun Peaks is a 45-minute drive from Kamloops — stay a night in Kamloops to save money and drive up fresh.
  • 4
Weekday skiing here is genuinely uncrowded even during school holidays — the resort's distance from major cities helps.

Local Secrets

  • The Headwaters run on Tod Mountain is a locals' favourite — long, consistent, rarely tracked out.
  • In summer, Sun Peaks' biathlon course is open to the public — rent rifles and ski the trails. Wild experience.

What to Avoid

  • Don't expect nightlife past 11pm — this is a family mountain. The village is charming but quiet after dinner.
  • Avoid the mountain on the rare sunny February weekend — those days bring everyone out.

Weather Reality

Sun Peaks gets significant clear weather compared to coastal resorts — over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year. This means cold, sunny powder days that are absolutely ideal skiing weather.

Hidden Gem

The Burfield to Heffley Lake trail in summer connects Sun Peaks to a remote alpine lake that very few visitors ever reach. Pack a lunch and go.

Ski Like a Local

  • The Grannie's run on Morrisey is perfectly groomed every morning and runs almost 3km without a break — perfect carving run.
  • Sunburst Bowl above the Sunburst chair is legitimately challenging and virtually unknown outside of locals.

Golf Like a Local

  • Sun Peaks Golf Course plays through the alpine meadows above the village — the elevated tees create approach shots you won't find anywhere else.
  • Book early June after the snow melts — the course grass is perfect and you'll have the place nearly to yourself.
