10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Sun Valley home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Sun Valley invented the destination ski resort. It opened in 1936 as the Union Pacific Railroad's attempt to sell train tickets to Idaho, and what they accidentally created was the template for every luxury ski resort that followed. Bald Mountain still has the best sustained vertical pitch of any ski run in the US. The resort has an unhurried elegance to it. The Sun Valley Lodge was built to match the chalets of the Swiss Alps, and it still has that quality after 90 years.

The Ketchum community surrounding the resort is where Hemingway wrote and died, where celebrities buy ranches, and where serious mountain athletes train. It has a sophisticated small-town atmosphere that Aspen is always trying to recreate. The Wood River Valley in summer is one of the most beautiful places in the Mountain West.

Insider Tips

  • 1
The north-facing bowls above Christmas lift hold the lightest snow - locals go there immediately on powder mornings.
  • 2
Sun Valley is one of the only major resorts where you can still get first chair without extreme early arrival.
  • 3
Dollar Mountain, the beginner hill, is separate from Baldy and genuinely excellent for first-timers.
  • 4
The traverse to Lookout Bowl from the top of Greyhawk lift accesses sustained expert terrain most visitors never find.

Local Secrets

  • Chandler's at the Sun Valley Lodge has a Sunday brunch that costs real money but is an Idaho institution.
  • The Hemingway Memorial north of Ketchum by Trail Creek is a simple bronze bust overlooking the river where he fished. Come at dusk.

What to Avoid

  • Do not drive past the junction of Highway 75 and Warm Springs Road - the Warm Springs base is the locals' entrance.
  • Avoid the River Run base lodge on weekends - warm up at the Warm Springs facility instead.
