10 Years Local Perspective

What Locals Actually Know

Insights from someone who has spent a decade calling Valle Nevado home. The things the resort brochures never tell you.

Local Perspective

Valle Nevado sits at 3,025m in the Chilean Andes and the drive up from Santiago - through the snow line, past the statue of Christ the Redeemer at the Argentine border, with the vertical walls of the Andes pressing in on both sides - is one of the most dramatic mountain approaches on earth. The resort itself has 3,670 skiable acres and the snowpack is exceptional because of the high elevation and the Chilean Andes weather systems. Skiing here in July while it is summer in Europe and North America is the ski addict's secret.

The Tres Valles ski area connects Valle Nevado to La Parva and El Colorado for a combined 8,000 hectares - the largest linked ski area in South America. Santiago is 50km east and sends weekend visitors up the mountain in significant numbers. The infrastructure at Valle Nevado is modern and the resort has been managed with care. Helicopter skiing on untouched Andean terrain accessible from the summit is the exclusive option for those willing to pay.
